Being bias is all based on opinion, and the things you have learned that make you feel a certain way. All people are different so everyone has a different thought on how things are or should be. Most time peoples background makes these biases. This happens because everyone has a different experience that leads them to different opinions on a certain topic. Biases come from the way they were taught, this includes how and who they were taught by. Biases only affect the way people feel and think about topics that usually has two sides. They are usually pro and against. Biases are usually adapted from their superiors or guardians that have cared for the person. Changing the biases can be difficult because people like to think one way and they don't necessarily want to be wrong. Making diases stronger the person has to be really invested in the topic and really believes in it. To weaken a person's bias opinion they will have to think outside of their comfort zone and be open to exploring new opportunities.
In the past couple of years my stance on gun control has changed because of the changing circumstances. My starting stance on gun control reflects the one of a liberal. I used to think that people should be able to bare arms as long as they have the right licenses and permits, however it is hard for our government to check every single person who has a gun. This is causing big problems because people are getting there hands on a gun off the internet and even the black market. With these surfacing cases I have recently changed my mind. I now believe that guns should be banned all over the United States, since the government is unable to keep track of all the guns that are made and distributed within the United States. The worst part is that children and adolescents are ending up with gun that they got illegally, and this is causing extreme danger to communities. The main focus of the police is to serve and protect, but how is someone supposed to protect when there is thing that can kill them before they can protect and serve. This is why my stance has changed over the years.
Personal biases can affect the way someone would write an article or story. It affects it because it could be a story/article that are favoring a topic and trying to convince someone that the writer is right. It could also affect it because it could be a negative connotation of the story/article, which would cause people to possibly disagree or even get angry. Writing and reporting is supposed to be informational, it is used to help see what is happening or what has happened. Having a pro or negative connotation can stray from what they original story/article was supposed to be about. It is important that people who are reporting should keep their articles unbiased. You can do this by just portraying the facts about the situation, and not having any kind of opinion statements. By not it be opinion based you need to keep I, me, my statement out of the writing. It helps just to explain what has happened or occurred and the facts and finding that have been introduced. Referencing the gun control stance can help understand not using bias opinions. If someone were to write a paper reviewing the presidential stance on gun control and they disagree with that person's stance they still need to write it as factual. They should write about what the candidate has said, not what they think should have been said. Biases control most people's words and statements.

  1. Word choice matters, and one great example of that is your first sentence. One cannot be bias. One can have a bias or be biased. I hadn't thought about bias as a pro/con thing, but that's a great insight. While the truth is certainly what we aim for, we also have to keep the interest of our readers, finding a way to report the truth or facts and stay interesting is what we need to learn and practice. Good work.
