Week 1 Newswritting

I Natalia Schack am a first year student at NDSU, however I am technically a sophomore credit wise. I am from Osseo, MN, and I chose NDSU because it has my field of study. I also have always wanted to attend because the campus always felt like home. I am taking this class because it is part of my pre-comm major, but I would also like to learn how to write and understand AP style writing. My major is Strategic Communications. After I graduate I hope to have my own practice of being an event manager. When I eat a PB&J sandwich I eat it just like a regular sandwich it is nothing special. One thing that I feel is unique is that I am super organized and I know where all of my stuff is located, and I set it up so it makes sense in my head. One things I am hoping to get out of this class is the skill of writing in AP style, and understand why they use it for article and journalism. For the question of, "what is your least favorite movie" I would say Old Boy. It was an extremely gross and disturbing movie. One thing I feel you should know is that I hate being bored and I don't like not know what is going to happen. One thing that you can do that will be helpful for this course is to tell us exactly what you will want from us on each assignment. Im super excited to learn more about AP style.

  1. AP Style is a pain in the butt. It's important to understand, but more important to keep the AP stylebook close by so you don't need to memorize every part of it. I'll continue doing my best to let you know what is expected with each assignment, but I don't want to stifle anyone's creativity or drive. If you need any more clarity, please let me know and I'll provide what I can.
I noticed a couple spaces where a comm would be helpful. In your first sentence, since your name takes the reader out of the flow of the sentence, there should be a comma both before and after it. We'll go over more of these rules as the semester winds on, but at the moment it's just worth keeping an eye on.
I asked about the PB&J because I have no idea what a 'regular' sandwich is to you. Because I'm taking this to an absurd extreme, I've decided that your regular sandwich has three slices of bread, and can be best described as a peanut butter sandwich on top of a jelly sandwich. When writing for an audience, words matter a lot more than one would think. Enjoy your weird version of a sandwich and I'm looking forward to reading more of your work this semester.
