Week 3 Journal
- To what extent do we learn these ideas of right & wrong from our environment? To what extent is this morality intrinsic, i.e., present in us from birth?
- We start to learn right and wrong from birth. We learn these ideas based on how we were raised and who we are raised by. Initially, we do a task or thing and others tell us if it's right or wrong based on the result. We are also told about things that are wrong without having to do it. Kids especially learn from watching older people and their peers. If a child sees someone they know treat someone bad they might see that as okay. We learn right and wrong from birth and our environments.
- Are there actions you believe are always morally wrong? Which actions? Why or why not?
- I believe that treating people like they are less than another is always morally wrong! This action is used called racism. I believe that everyone is equal and should be able to live life the way they would like too. I think this because we have already been through slavery and we have left it in the past. There is no reason why we need to bring it back to 2020. All people are brought into this world the same way. An example I always think of is two different colored eggs, but inside are exactly the same.
- Can one live morally without the guidance of religion? Why or why not?
- Yes, I have lived with morals my whole life without answering to any religion. I was baptised in a Lutheran church, but I have never followed the rules and regulations that were supposed to be set for a lutheran child. People don’t have to be apart of something in order to know what to think or believe. Some may think they need a religion because they don't know how or what to say when it comes to their morals.
- Is empathy the proper basis for morality? Why or why not?
- I think that morality should be based on empathy, since empathy is sharing and understanding others. Having morals can help understand other and where they come from. This goes for their thoughts and the background. Most people understand and feel for others. However, that isn't always the case and for those people they don't come with great moral compasses.
Good answers. I didn't see any issues with the content and only a couple small grammatical issues. When using words like 'apart,' make sure you're using the correct word. To be a part of something means to be included in that thing, while being apart from something means to be distanced from it.
