Writing has always been a part of my career plan, however I can never find the right words to use to explain my writing. Writing and reading has been a problem I struggled with all through elementary school and some into middle school. Since then I have worked hard everyday to be at the same reading level as my peers. It wasn’t until this semester that I actually found my voice in my reading. I always thought that papers and articles needed to be literal and full of facts. I have come to find that I have way more fun writing when I am writing about something I am interested in. It is also easier when I can be sarcastic and pro or against something. Over the semester I have noticed that my writing got better and longer the more fun I had with it.
The first paper of the spring semester was about personal biases, and even as I skim over the paper I can tell that it isn't a really interactive paper. It read like an assignment that needed to be completed, and man was that boring. The next couple articles were just as bad, and they were terribly worded. I always used to write and then submit it right after completing, and this was not good because sometimes what I was writing didn't make sense.
One of the best papers I think I wrote was the Week 7 News Writing assignment. This assignment helped explain that, “words matter and you want people to read your work, you’re going to create headlines for five stories without headlines”, I would like to thank Peter Lindmark for giving us this assignment. This assignment was both fun and interesting. Even reading the first couple paragraphs of the article I could come up with a good title that represented the article. After I had finished my personal headlines I searched the article and the original headline was very similar to the headline that I had come up with on my own. I have also had a lot of interest in naming and summarizing stories to grab people attention.
Even though writing has been a struggle for me in the past I have worked hard to make sure that I am understanding the article and directions of any assignment. Since I decided that my major was going to be in the communications field I realized that I am going to have to work with millions of different types of articles and people. This class has helped me broaden my horizon to all the different types of things that I could write about in my future career.
You're a great writer and I can't wait to see what you work on next.
